Your initial appointment will usually last around 60 minutes.
The appointment will begin with a detailed conversation about your symptoms, medical history and individual circumstances. This may include:
Following your assessment, we will discuss whether a physical examination would be helpful.
Depending on your symptoms, this may include assessment of your posture, breathing, abdominal muscles, movement and pelvic floor function.
For some pelvic floor problems, an internal examination may be recommended. This may be a vaginal or ano-rectal examination, depending on your symptoms and what needs to be assessed.
An internal examination is never compulsory.
If an internal examination is clinically appropriate, I will explain exactly what it involves and why it may be helpful. It will only be undertaken with your informed consent, and you remain in control throughout.
If you would prefer not to have an internal examination, there are alternative ways of assessing and treating your symptoms. These may include visual assessment, breathing assessment, abdominal and core assessment and functional movement assessment.
If the thought of an internal examination is making you hesitate about booking an appointment, please don't let this stop you from getting help. You are very welcome to get in touch to discuss any concerns before making an appointment.

These symptoms are common, but not normal. Specialist pelvic health physiotherapy can help you understand what's happening, improve your symptoms and regain confidence in your body.
Will I need an internal examination?
An internal examination can be very useful when assessing the pelvic floor muscles, but it is not compulsory.
If an internal examination is clinically appropriate, I will explain why it may be helpful and what it involves. It will only take place with your full, informed consent.
If you would prefer not to have an internal examination, alternative assessment methods can be used, such as visual assessment, breathing assessment, abdominal and core assessment and functional movement assessment.
If concerns about an internal examination are stopping you from making an appointment, please get in touch. We can discuss any worries you may have before you decide whether to book.
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You do not need a GP referral to make an appointment for private pelvic health physiotherapy.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your initial appointment provides a calm and supportive space to discuss your symptoms and concerns openly and comfortably.
We will begin with a detailed discussion about your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle, exercise and goals. A physical assessment may then be recommended depending on your individual circumstances.
This may include assessment of your breathing, posture, abdominal muscles, movement and pelvic floor function. An internal vaginal or ano-rectal examination may be offered where clinically appropriate, but this is always optional and requires your full consent.
Can pelvic health physiotherapy help with bladder leakage?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy can be very effective in helping people improve bladder control and manage urinary leakage.
Treatment will depend on the type of bladder symptoms you have and may include pelvic floor rehabilitation, bladder retraining, lifestyle advice, pressure management and exercise.
Can pelvic health Physiotherapy help with prolapse?
Yes. Physiotherapy can help you understand your prolapse and learn strategies to manage your symptoms.
Treatment may include pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation, breathing and pressure management, lifestyle advice and guidance around exercise and activities.
Can pelvic health Physiotherapy help with pelvic pain?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy can be helpful for many types of pelvic pain.
Treatment will depend on what is contributing to your symptoms and may include education, breathing and relaxation strategies, pelvic floor down-training, manual therapy, movement and exercise.
Can I have physiotherapy during or after having a baby?
Yes. Pelvic health physiotherapy can be helpful during pregnancy and throughout your postnatal recovery.
The timing and type of assessment will depend on your individual circumstances. At certain stages an internal examination may not be appropriate, but there are many alternative assessment and treatment options available.
How many appointments will I need?
This varies from person to person and depends on your symptoms, circumstances and goals.
We will discuss your treatment plan during your initial appointment so that you have a clear idea of what may be helpful for you.
What should I wear?
You can wear your normal, comfortable clothes.
If you choose to have an internal examination, it may be helpful to wear clothing that is easy to remove from your lower body. You will be given privacy and time to change if an examination is required.
If you're experiencing bladder, bowel or pelvic floor symptoms, pelvic pain, prolapse or pregnancy-related pelvic health problems, specialist physiotherapy may be able to help.
